September leaves Indian shares bruised
September ended on a weak note for Indian equities. The Nifty slipped to 22,620.45 and the Sensex to 72,480.29, completing their worst month since March as high oil, global rate hikes and foreign selling weighed on risk appetite. The rupee strengthened to 95.83 per dollar but still fell over the month. Gold rose in Mumbai. Away from markets, India approved a large clean-energy programme, while Elevate Campuses made a muted stock-market debut.
Why it matters
A weak month can affect portfolio values, but the bigger lesson is that global oil, interest rates and foreign flows can move Indian markets together.
