Money and Markets in 5 Minutes

A rough day. US bond yields at a 19-year high, Brent crude back above $105 and new insurance commission proposals pushed every major sector lower, with financials hit hardest. The rupee weakened to 95.96 per dollar. One bright spot: NSE listed and closed its first day above its issue price.

Why it matters

A 1.6% fall feels big, but for goals years away, one day's move changes very little.

Things worth knowing

  1. 01
    MARKETS

Oil and bonds hit Indian shares

The Sensex fell 1,247.71 points (1.67%) to 73,580.54 and the Nifty 383.70 points (1.64%) to 23,063.10. All 16 major sectors ended lower and midcaps fell 2.25%.

    So what for you?

A 1.6% fall feels big, but for goals years away, one day's move changes very little.

  2. 02
    INSURANCE

New commission rules shake financial stocks

IRDAI proposed bringing back caps on commissions paid by insurers to banks, brokers and agents, while spreading some life insurance commission payouts over a policy's duration. It also proposed barring banks from making insurance a condition for a loan. Banks and financials fell 2% and 2.4%, while PB Fintech tumbled 36%.

    So what for you?

Lower distribution commissions could eventually reduce insurance costs, but the proposals are still open for feedback (until 25 October) and are not final.

  3. 03
    CURRENCY

    Rupee slips as oil climbs

The rupee fell 23 paise to 95.96 per dollar as Brent crude rose above $105 and the dollar firmied. Dollar sales linked to the RBI limited the fall.

    So what for you?

A weaker rupee raises the cost of anything priced in dollars, from fuel to foreign travel.
