Sensex and Nifty fall for a second day, but recover from the lows

Markets slipped for a second straight day: the Sensex fell 242.65 points to 72,529.07 and the Nifty 50 lost 64.05 points to 22,716.20, though both climbed well off their morning lows. IT, auto and consumer durables did the damage while pharma, metals and media held up. The rupee inched up 2 paise to 95.95 a dollar after flirting with 96, helped by a small dip in crude and likely RBI support. Gold fell again in Mumbai as rising bond yields at home and in the US pulled money away from the metal. In company news, Varmora Granito listed at a small premium and Ola Electric's shares fell after it announced a ₹1,000 crore rights issue.

Why it matters

A day when the index falls 0.3% but decliners outnumber gainers tells you the selling was wider than the headline suggests. If you invest through a monthly SIP, days like these simply mean your fixed amount buys a few more units; the number worth watching is your long-term plan, not one session.

    MARKETS

Sensex and Nifty fall for a second day, but recover from the lows

The Sensex closed at 72,529.07, down 242.65 points (0.33%), and the Nifty 50 ended at 22,716.20, down 64.05 points (0.28%). Both had been down close to 1% in early trade before buyers stepped in. IT, auto and consumer durables indices each fell more than 1%, with Titan, Wipro and HCL Technologies among the biggest Nifty losers. Adani Enterprises, Adani Ports and Dr. Reddy's Labs led the gainers, and pharma, metals and media were the green pockets. The broader market was weaker than the headline: the Nifty Midcap fell about 0.6% and the Smallcap about 0.8%, with 2,321 stocks declining against 1,871 advancing. Foreign investors had sold a net ₹5,353.22 crore of Indian shares on Monday, and elevated crude and rising bond yields kept the mood cautious.

    So what for you?

A day when the index falls 0.3% but decliners outnumber gainers tells you the selling was wider than the headline suggests. If you invest through a monthly SIP, days like these simply mean your fixed amount buys a few more units; the number worth watching is your long-term plan, not one session.

    CURRENCY

Rupee holds just under 96 to the dollar

The rupee settled at 95.95 against the US dollar, up 2 paise from Monday's close of 95.97. It opened weaker at 96.03 and touched 96.15 during the day before recovering, as forex traders pointed to likely RBI intervention near the 96 mark and a slight pullback in crude prices on hopes of US and Iran talks. Dollar demand from importers and a firmer dollar index (around 101.44) limited the gain. On Monday the rupee had crossed 96 for the second time in two weeks.

    So what for you?

A weaker rupee quietly raises the cost of anything priced in dollars: foreign holidays, overseas tuition, imported gadgets and, eventually, fuel. If you have a big dollar expense coming up, it helps to know that the exchange rate is one of the variables in that budget.

  3. 03
    ECONOMY

    India's 10-year bond yield sits near a two-year high

India's benchmark 10-year government bond yield hovered around 7.18% to 7.19%, its highest level since April 2024. The push is coming from several directions: the US 10-year Treasury yield climbed to roughly 5.2%, a 19-year high, crude oil remains above $105 a barrel, and August retail inflation was 4.82%. The RBI's Monetary Policy Committee meets from 5 to 7 October, with its decision due on 7 October.

    So what for you?

Bond yields are the market's price of borrowing money. When they rise, fixed deposit rates can eventually follow, while new loans can get costlier, and existing debt fund values can dip. It is a good moment to understand whether your home loan is on a floating rate and how it is linked to the repo rate.

    COMMODITIES

    Gold slides again in Mumbai

24K gold in Mumbai was quoted at ₹1,48,800 per 10 grams, down ₹1,370 (0.91%) from ₹1,50,170 on Monday. Higher bond yields make interest-paying assets relatively more attractive than gold, which pays no interest.

    So what for you?

Gold prices move with global rates and the dollar, not just with festive demand. If you are buying for a wedding or festival, knowing these drivers helps you understand why the price changes week to week, without treating short swings as a signal.
